I am aaaaaliiiiiiiiiiive!

So it may seam that since finishing uni for the summer I have done diddly squat. In regards to blogging you would be correct in this assumption.
However, I have been trying to get some things done for an oh so wow-some competition. Unfortunately I mucked up the deadlines and so missed handing it in. But I worked hard on it and at least I have some things to put in my portfolio.

The competition was this
Basically you had to come up with a new design to illustrate Beauty and The Beast. And if you won it would be, to quote The Incredibles, 'totally Wicked!'
For the first round we had to show three character designs and a double spread illustration.

'Before leaving, he asks his daughters whether they desire that he bring them any gift upon his return. His two elder daughters ask for jewels and fine dresses, thinking that his wealth has returned; Belle is satisfied with the promise of a rose, as none grow in their part of the country.'

Cue huge over haul. It was decided that this style was over cute and probably slightly patronising. So I went the other way and decided to make something that was a bit different and probably more gruesome.

'Upon picking the most lovely rose he finds, the merchant is confronted by a hideous 'Beast', which tells him that for taking his (the Beast's) most precious possession after accepting his hospitality, the merchant must die.'

'Upon returning, Belle finds the Beast almost dead, and she weeps over him, saying that she loves him.'

A Rawsome day!

We went to Bristol Zoo yesterday, with the intention to draw. It was a glorious day, the sun was out and yeah, just great. There were lion cubs, baby meerkats, prairie dog pups and a day old seal cub! An ideal day for me I have to say.
We got to the zoo as it opened and spend the whole day there, which made forking out the £12 entrant fee worth it.
I got down to sketching rather late in the day though as it was heaving, half term and all. It made it a little bit awkward. I had one girl decide to sketch with me then have a massive tantrum because she didn't like her drawing. Her mum managed to pacify her though by redoing the drawing for her. (I thought it was rather good though).
I havn't drawn from life in a little while so the drawings are a bit rought, and I have to say I was completely taken by the cubs so I drew them most.

Inspiration strikes.

Whilst trying to create Neeva a facebook page it occured to me that although I have had her for years she doesn't really have a past or a future, she is what I want her to be. This is great but probably a bad place to start in terms of character design.
SoI decided to create a new character; Penny. She has a whole timeline of events that have scarred her and mean that I know how she would react to situations. I willl try and do some art that depicts her life and not just her pulling faces, but for now she's only just started and I am playing with her look -

When Penny is 18 she starts work at a bar and dates one of the bouncers, Jeff, he turns out to be a bit of a mistake.
So yeah, hopefully I'll do some more so you can see her full life story. Maybe try my hand at a comic or something.
